Roller derby is a fast-paced, hard hitting, endurance-based sport that takes lots of time, dedication, and sheer mental ability. If you think you can hack it, come out and show us what you’ve got.

Gearing up for Tryouts
Regardless of whether tryouts are a few months away or just around the corner, there are things you can do to prepare. Our Derby Boot Camps precede our tryouts, and we heartily encourage all rollergirl wannabes to attend. But while you’re waiting, here are some other ways to prepare:

  • You may only sign up for Pump Up Camp from August 15 to September 12 on Sundays 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM and Tuesdays 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM. We will not be accepting new skaters after September 12 in the Pump Up Camp program.
  • The fee for the Pump Up Camp is $35 dollars a month. To participate you must have a helmet, mouth guard, wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads. You may use the rink skates but it is highly recommended to purchase your own skates whenever it is financially possible. You must have health insurance to skate with Kansas City Roller Warriors. There are no exceptions to this rule. Please do not ask. When you come to sign up for camp you will need the equipment I mentioned, $35, a copy of your health insurance card and a copy of your driver''s license to beging the program.
  • Preliminary Tryout -- Sunday October 17 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The preliminary tryout is the Scrimmage Eligibility Test, which tests your skating skills and basic hitting techniques. You do not have to participate in Pump Up Camp to attend the Preliminary Tryout, but it is highly recommended. The fee for tryout is $20. If you participated in both months of Pump Up Camp, the tryout fee will be waived. If you pass the preliminary tryout, we will then move on to scrimmaging at practice
  • Final Tryout -- Sunday December 5, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Tuesday December 7, 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM and Wednesday December 8, 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. You will be scrimmaging with a different home team at each practice. Team captains and co-captains will be judging you when they play with you and against you. Another thing to keep in mind with a scrimmage tryout is that is not always about how you skated but how you handled yourself under pressure. Being a good teammate is a quality team captains will be looking for girls they want to recruit, not just skating ability.

You have to pass the preliminary tryout to move to the final tryout.

  • Learn the rules. The current WFTDA ruleset can be downloaded here. However, the rules are complex and simply reading the rules might not be enough – you’ll have to watch derby, live and on YouTube, and spot all the rules in play. If you have questions, ask a rollergirl!
