| Looking to try-out for the 2009 Season? Our next Try Out Skate Clinic is Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 10am and Official Try Outs is Sunday Janaury 4, 2009 at 9am. Both are scheduled at Winnwood Skater Center at 4424 NE Winn Road. |
| 1) Who are the Kansas City
Roller Warriors? |
| The Kansas City Roller Warriors is
an all-female flat track roller derby league comprised of four
home teams plus an AllStar team that competes and represents KCRW nationally. |
| |
| 2) How old do you need to be
to participate? |
| You must be at least 18 years or older
to join the league. |
| |
| 3) Are you allowed to use inline
skates? |
| No, we play derby on quad skates. |
| |
| 4) What types of responsibilities
come with joining KCRW? |
Playing for KCRW is a considerable
time and energy commitment. You will be expected to maintain
a 60% attendance record , with practices on Sunday morning and
Tuesday and Wednesday night at Winnwood Skate Center. Although
we do not wish to exclude anyone of modest financial means,
until we have large sponsors that foot our bills, we require skaters
to pay an annual $50 membership fee, plus monthly "skater dues"
that are currently set at $35 (and lowered upon completion of
your first season). Another cost to consider is the purchasing
of equipment (skates/helmet/pads).
All skaters are required to carry primary health insurance plus a secondary insurance policy that we purchase through USA Roller Sports for $40 a year. The primary health insurance (usually provided through an employer but also available for purchase separately) is your responsibility to have before Tryouts. We will help you set up USARS insurance after Tryouts. If you do not currently have health insurance but wish to purchase it in order to be eligible to skate, we can present you with some options.
Besides practice, other aspects of the
league require time from each skater. Skaters are
required to serve on one of several committees that
help run our league. They range from sponsorship to
rules to bout production. Other time commitments
include putting on and attending league fundraisers
and promotional events. |

| 5) Will I need to purchase
equipment for tryouts? |
You will need skates, a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a mouth guard. If you don't have your own skates, the rink has skates you can borrow for free. The rest of the equipment is your responsibility. If you're unsure about buying the equipment for yourself or can't afford it yet, please contact join@kcrollerwarriors.com and we will try to hook you up with some borrowed pads from a current skater. |
| |
| 6) What will be tested at Tryouts? |
Your roller skating skills. We don't expect you to know how to play derby, but we do look for candidates that have a foundation in skating skills and athletic ability. These are some general skills we are looking for: good stance (bent knees, long strides, crossovers), good balance, agility, speed, and pacing.
These are examples of some drills we might do at Tryouts: Cone weaving; Sprints and timed laps; One foot glides, hopping; Lunges; Pacing in a pack or line; Steering/Leaning with a partner.
